While walking along a beach,
a man saw someone in the distance leaning down,
picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.
As he came closer,
he saw thousands of starfish the tide had thrown onto the beach.
Unable to return to the ocean during low tide,
the starfish were dying.
He observed a young man picking up the starfish one by one
and throwing them back into the water.
After watching the seemingly futile effort, the observer said,
"There must be thousands of starfish on this beach.
It would be impossible for you to get to all of them.
There are simply too many.
You can't possibly save enough to make a difference."
The young man smiled as he continued to pick up another starfish
and toss it back into the ocean.
He replied.
"It made a difference to that one."
어떤 사람이 해변을 따라 걷고 있던 중, 누군가 멀리서 허리를 구부려 무언가를 집어서 바다로 던지고 있는 것을 보았습니다.
가까이 다가가자, 해변에는 파도에 밀려온 수천마리의 불가사리가 즐비하게 늘어서 있었습니다. 찰랑거리는 파도가 짧아 바다에 돌아가지 못하고 죽어가고 있었습니다.
어떤 사람이 계속 불가사리를 한 마리씩 집어서는 바다로 던지고 있던 참이었습니다.
이 구경꾼은 한참 이 쓸데없어 보이는 일을 지켜보다가 한 마디했지요.
"이 해변에 불가사리들이 수천 마리는 될 텐데.
당신이 다 던져 넣을 수도 없다고. 너무 많아.
당신이 몇 마리 바다로 던진다고 해서 뭐 달라지겠어?"
그 젊은이는 계속 불가사리를 집어서 바다로 던지면서 빙그레 미소짓고는 대답했습니다.
"이놈한테는 다르지요."
